Start with a single complete acquisition amount
Use the price guide and landed-cost worksheet to include the actual inspection, preparation, documents, transport and destination readiness scope. Retain date, currency, responsible parties and exclusions. Do not compare a China-side ask with a local ready-to-use alternative or charge an included item again. Separate optional preferences from work necessary for acceptance. A purchase estimate may remain conditional where a material destination or technical question is unresolved. The ownership worksheet cannot make that uncertainty disappear by giving it a convenient small allowance; the starting amount must describe what the buyer will actually receive and which prerequisites are still open.
Define repeatable distance and supported energy inputs
Record ordinary routes, climate, load and yearly distance assumptions. Use the measured energy assessment and actual public charging access where appropriate. Compare vehicle-side observations and billed wall energy on their respective stated boundaries rather than assume they are identical. Retain credible dated electricity prices, session fees and any necessary home installation. If an engine-equipped vehicle is being considered, include its relevant fuel pattern without treating a combined or weighted promotional figure as the owner’s guaranteed bill. Keep an explicit less-favourable energy-access case so a savings claim does not depend entirely on inexpensive charging that the buyer cannot reliably repeat.
Obtain configuration-specific maintenance and operating scope
Use the maintenance inquiry and VIN support guide to request applicable procedures, material requirements and receiving-provider scope. Do not invent universal intervals or assume an electric drivetrain means no regular work. Add actual tyre, brake and other relevant operating expenses based on condition and credible use, not a blanket guessed annual package. Insurance, recurring taxes, permits or inspection fees need current provider or destination confirmation; no jurisdiction-wide amount is asserted. Distinguish necessary ownership costs from accessories and preference spending. The worksheet should preserve what supports each line so another reviewer can see whether it applies to the actual vehicle and proposed operating period.
Keep diagnosed correction separate from uncertain exposure
Put supported acquisition correction in the starting boundary once. If a present finding still needs diagnosis, classify it as an open acceptance question rather than silently distribute it over three years. The battery-value decision keeps diagnostic estimates from becoming guaranteed future replacement dates. Establish coverage responsibility separately from paid repair access. Sensitivity cases can explain how a plausible change affects affordability, but they are not forecasts of failures. Where an essential high-voltage or support question is unbounded, a technically unsuitable car does not become an acceptable purchase because the average spreadsheet figure appears low. Resolve the important prerequisite before treating the ownership arrangement as comparable.
State an exit assumption rather than promise resale
Choose the same horizon and expected final duty for both candidates. Use defensible current comparison evidence where available, while making the hypothetical exit value and sale costs explicit. Do not declare a guaranteed A06 resale percentage or assume higher trim automatically returns its premium. Future market demand, condition, regulation and buyer access can differ from today’s offer. Present the result with and without the assumed exit credit so its importance is visible. A precise calculated total is only as strong as its inputs; use sensible rounding instead of implying forecasting accuracy through many decimals or a single seemingly certain depreciation number.
Read the result as a decision with changing assumptions
Compare the consistent expected cases and note the conditions that would change the recommendation: charging price, access, distance, support or exit value. A useful import-versus-local comparison can share the method without borrowing the alternative’s actual coverage or energy assumptions. Prefer the offer whose essential operating plan is supported and remains affordable in the defined less-favourable case. Record the acquisition terms in the purchase schedule and update the owner’s baseline after arrival checks. The worksheet supports a considered purchase; it does not guarantee the amount the owner will spend or recover over every future year.
Compare the acceptance conditions
- Comparison is usable
- Both offers use the same readiness, duty and time boundary with traceable supported costs and explicit exit assumptions.
- Change an assumption openly
- An energy, support or exit input materially affects the recommendation; show the alternative case.
- Resolve acceptance first
- Important technical or destination exposure remains unbounded and should not be treated as a routine running-cost line.
Buyer evidence checklist
- Complete acquisition without duplicate charges
- Repeatable duty and dated energy inputs
- Applicable receiving maintenance scope
- Separate diagnosis, coverage and sensitivity
- Explicit exit credit and horizon
Questions before you buy
Is this a guaranteed three-year A06 running-cost figure?
No. Build the worksheet from actual offers and supported inputs; future use, prices, condition and exit value remain uncertain.
Should repairs already included in preparation be counted again?
No. Keep each cost at its correct boundary once and distinguish acquisition correction from later operating assumptions.
