Measure A06 Energy Use on a Comparable Route

A useful A06 range assessment records what the car did on a defined route, not only the number shown when fully charged. Keep the route, vehicle, load, weather and energy measurement method visible. This plan helps compare buying evidence; it does not guarantee distance, certify battery capacity or justify deliberately driving to an unsafe low charge.

Choose one driving task before collecting figures

Write the buyer's normal distance, road type, traffic, passenger load and charging access. Identify the actual powertrain and battery configuration through the vehicle identity checks. A battery-electric demonstration should not silently become a range claim for a different configuration. Select a legal, safe route that resembles the task and has an adequate reserve and recovery plan. Keep motorway, urban and mixed-route results distinct. An easy, lightly loaded seller demonstration may provide preliminary information, but it should not be described as proof that a heavily loaded car will complete a cold-weather journey without charging.

Record a comparable start and finish

Record date, candidate identifier, odometer, displayed state of charge, ambient conditions and the vehicle's settings at both ends. Note whether the car was recently charged, preconditioned or parked in a warmer space. Keep tyre specification and pressure evidence with the record using the tyre and wheel review. Photograph readings consistently and preserve the unedited information. Do not claim more precision than the display provides; charge percentages may be rounded, and short journeys can make small changes hard to interpret. A test without a reliable starting condition cannot support a defensible comparison with another vehicle.

Keep cabin comfort and passenger load realistic

Use the climate settings and occupied-seat arrangement the buyer expects, rather than switching everything off to improve the result. Record luggage and accessories that materially affect the task. Assess climate operation separately through the heating and cooling checks. A test that sacrifices required demisting or comfortable conditions may not answer the ownership question. In a freezing destination, explain the preparation used and any unverified cold-weather capability. Never instruct a driver to compromise visibility or safe operation for an efficiency figure. Practical energy demand includes the functions required for the actual journey.

Distinguish displayed consumption from charger energy

Vehicle-displayed driving energy, state-of-charge change and the energy reported by a charging session are different measurements. Record the unit and boundary for every number; do not combine them as if they were the same. If an energy figure and distance are available on a consistent basis, the calculation is energy divided by distance, multiplied by 100 for energy per 100 kilometres. Explain any included charging losses or excluded auxiliaries rather than claiming a battery-capacity result. The battery condition assessment requires its own method. A route observation can support use planning without proving the pack's usable capacity or overall health.

Repeat material conditions before drawing a conclusion

A single short run can be distorted by traffic, gradient, wind, temperature or a cold start. Repeat relevant conditions where practical and record differences instead of selecting only the most favourable result. Compare the same route direction or account for the route's structure in the notes. Do not perform unsafe coasting, overspeeding or deliberately near-empty tests to obtain a better or more dramatic number. Preserve warnings and unusual behaviour as inspection findings. If the car's condition changes after a repair, repeat the affected assessment; evidence from before the work should not be presented as the current vehicle result.

Convert observations into a conservative route plan

Use the findings to define charging opportunities, reserve and realistic limitations, following the long-distance charging plan. Keep publicly advertised range and its test cycle separate from the buyer's observed task. The chosen reserve must reflect the actual environment and competent operating advice; do not invent a universal safe percentage. Confirm charging access and payment independently because a working inlet does not make an unavailable station usable. If the tested route differs substantially from the destination, state what remains uncertain. The outcome may be suitable with reliable home charging yet unproven for an occasional long winter trip.

Use the result in an A06 versus A07 decision

Apply the same evidence boundary when using the A06 and A07 comparison. Prefer observations from identified configurations with comparable route, load and preparation rather than a maximum range figure from one car and a difficult real-world result from the other. For example, an A06 demonstrated on a mild urban day cannot be fairly ranked against an A07 tested on a cold motorway solely by consumption numbers. Record the missing comparable test and combine energy use with passenger fit, charging and support. The conditional buying result should explain the task each candidate can support, not announce a universal model winner.

Buyer checklist

  • Vehicle and powertrain matched
  • Route and distance recorded
  • Start and finish conditions preserved
  • Load and climate settings retained
  • Measurement boundaries separated
  • Charging reserve and limits documented

Buyer questions

Is the dashboard range a guaranteed driving distance?

No. Keep its estimate separate from observed route evidence and the conditions the buyer will actually encounter.

Can a road-energy test certify battery health?

No. Route use and battery health require different evidence and measurement methods. A useful route result does not replace diagnostics or capacity assessment.

Should A06 and A07 be tested in identical conditions?

Use comparable identified versions and conditions where practical. Explain meaningful differences rather than treating unequal demonstrations as a fair numerical ranking.
