Ask what the seller means by new
Request a precise description of production date, registration history, ownership and use. A seller may use nearly new to describe condition, while the buyer understands it as an unregistered vehicle. Resolve that difference in writing. The A06 new-versus-used guide sets the broader comparison, but the contract must describe the particular car. Do not make a legal classification from marketing language; obtain destination advice where registration status changes import eligibility, tax treatment or the documents required.
Separate production age from recorded distance
A car can travel very little while spending substantial time in storage or on display. Check production information, dated inventory records and any servicing or preparation history. Low mileage does not prove that the tyres, low-voltage battery or charging history are equivalent to recently prepared stock. Ask how the vehicle was stored and maintained, marking unsupported answers as seller statements. Avoid claiming deterioration solely from age, but include an appropriate condition check rather than using the odometer as a complete health certificate.
Identify demonstration and customer-use evidence
Ask whether the vehicle was driven for test demonstrations, staff use, events or temporary customer transport. Inspect the relevant interior, tyres and controls, but do not translate one worn surface into a precise mileage allegation. The history and mileage review should reconcile records and physical observations. A demonstration car may still be a sensible purchase if its use, condition and commercial terms are transparent. The problem is an undisclosed history being priced as a different proposition.
Keep battery assessment proportional to the evidence
A low odometer reading does not replace the battery and charging checks appropriate to the candidate. Request supported diagnostics and condition evidence, especially where storage or prior use is unclear. Use the battery-report interpretation guide to avoid treating one attractive percentage as proof of new status. A report can describe certain condition findings but cannot establish registration history or ownership. Conversely, documented prior registration does not itself prove that the battery is unhealthy.
Confirm warranty and included preparation directly
Ask the responsible provider when any coverage begins, what transfers and whether destination use is supported. Do not assume that an unregistered export automatically receives all domestic promotions. List pre-delivery work, accessories, keys and any repairs included in the price. A discount may be reasonable compensation for known history, but it should not conceal uncertain access or unavailable support. If the seller promises a specific benefit, obtain the applicable written terms and distinguish the seller's own commitment from a manufacturer's policy.
Compare like-for-like delivered offers
Put production age, registration status, mileage, known use, condition findings, included work and delivery terms side by side. Use the A06 export price guide to keep freight and other costs distinct. Do not decide from the advertised discount alone. If one candidate's status is unresolved, mark it as unresolved rather than assuming the most favourable category. The final agreement should connect the accepted description and evidence to one VIN, with a fresh review if a substitute vehicle is proposed.
Example: an almost unused showroom vehicle
A showroom A06 has minimal recorded distance and clean upholstery, but it was registered months earlier and used for demonstrations. Another candidate is unregistered with a different preparation and support package. Neither label alone decides value. Compare the documented status, actual condition and destination consequences, then price the difference. If the buyer specifically requires unregistered stock, the demonstration car does not meet that brief simply because its mileage is low or its exterior has been polished.
Buyer checklist
- Define production, registration, ownership and use separately.
- Investigate storage and preparation history.
- Keep battery condition distinct from commercial status.
- Connect the accepted description and included work to one VIN.
Questions and answers
Does low mileage mean an A06 is new?
No. Registration, ownership, prior use and the applicable commercial and destination definitions must be checked separately.
Is a demonstration car always a poor purchase?
No. It can be suitable when its history, condition, price and terms are transparent and match the buyer’s requirements.
